A sure evacuation solution for tunnel operations

In accordance with the applicable SBB standards and the latest fire safety stipulations, a comprehensive safety lighting system for the evacuation of people from the tunnel was planned, implemented and successfully commissioned for the Forchbahn.

The aim of the project was to ensure safe wayfinding and clearly recognisable escape routes for everyone inside the tunnel in case of an incident. Particular attention was paid to ensuring a durable and low-maintenance version.

The hand rails were mounted directly to the tunnel walls and comply with the relevant standards. In addition, they were specifically tested for use in the event of a fire to ensure their functionality even under extreme conditions. To provide continuous and safe guidance along the escape route, GIFAS also installed made-to-measure curved sections using the INOX48 system handrail, so that the signal boxes did not need to be dismounted.

The LaneLED GRP system (yellow) used was project-specific and integrated precisely into the existing infrastructure using specially developed angle brackets. This enabled optimal illumination to be achieved without interfering with the existing installations.

In addition, power socket distribution units were installed to facilitate maintenance and servicing work in the tunnel. Alongside the safety lighting, reliable general and maintenance lighting was also provided for regular operations and inspection work.

The result is a well-thought-out, standards-compliant and future-oriented solution for enhanced safety in tunnel operations.
